The lowdown...

Jen Schaffer and the Shiners hail from Toronto, Montreal and the UK! They are purveyors of original soulful folkrock music with lush harmonies and deep grooves.

Jen Schaffer is the lead singer, songwriter and acoustic guitarist. She came to music via a stint as a public defender in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio, where she gained a love of alt-country music and a heightened social conscience.

The Shiners are: Simon Law on drums, keyboards and background vocals, Hideki Kumagai on bass, and John Teshima on guitar, keyboard and background vocals.

This five-song albumette or EP - The Paradox of Life Confounds - was recorded at Canterbury Music Company on a weekend in late February, right before the hallowed halls of this Toronto music Mecca closed its doors.

We made both our previous full-length Shiner albums there with Jeremy Darby: Fate Line (2014) and Games We Play (2018).  It was a thrill to be back for this precious last chance to record some new and old -but-not-yet-recorded Shiner materials.

The artwork for The Paradox Of Life Confounds is by Vered Rosa Goldman, a young Israeli artist now based in Florence, Italy. Read more about the making of here.

Our Shiner holiday song, Homes for the Holiday, is a call for people to find their own way to connect with and celebrate the winter holidays - in a deliberate and mindful way.

The intention behind this release, other than to share our latest musical endeavour with you all, is to raise funds and awareness around the disturbingly pronounced housing crisis.

To that end, we are shining a light on (and donating net profits from the sale of the song to) organizations like the Canadian Centre for Housing Rights (CCHR), the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) and More Neighbours Toronto (MNTO), that support and advocate in various ways for the right to housing, that is, a right for everyone to have an adequate, accessible and affordable place to call home.

The song is an intense and bitter ballad written by Jen a few years ago. Workshopped and performed by the Shiners, it has only now been recorded and transformed at the hands of three-time Grammy winning, MOBO lifetime achievement award winning producer and arranger extraordinaire, Simon Law.

During a recent visit to Jen's mother’s home in Montreal, a small section of Jen's grandparent’s Persian rug struck her and inspired the art for the new song! Intended as a death-by-a-thousand-cuts love and neglect song, the "severed nerve revealed" in the lyrics and the Persian carpet's tale of hunt and hunted resonated strongly. Especially, given the heightened uncertainty and vulnerability of the current geopolitical climate.

Born out of a particular, existential and current Jewish struggle, the song contains universal themes and aspirations, like respect, dignity and understanding.

Jen says the song is intended to be a response to the dark feelings of fear, anger and painful groundlessness that arose for so many of us after the atrocities of October 7th 2023, subsequent war and exponential rise in global antisemitism.

The opening lyrics to the song came to Jen after reading an article in Tricycle about the Buddhist notion of karma (action driven by intention which leads to future consequences), and reading another article in Tablet Magazine that included the observation that Arabs and Jews are partners in fate. (Partners in Fate is also the first ever joint Jewish-Arab emergency relief centre).

The essential sentiment for the song - that intentions matter and we can choose to widen or lessen the rifts between us.

Grateful to her band mates for lending their talent and allied support to the creation of this recording, Jen gives a special shout out to her partner Simon Law, who she says truly applied his deep skills to the recording, arranging and production of this song. Jen is also thrilled that occasional Shiner violinist Emmanuel Szeptycki, has contributed their flare and vibes to the song.
